Trump & Asia = Beauty & The Beast?

Asia's Critical News

Asia has become the focus point of the Trump administration. North Korea continues to advance its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and China continues to militarize the South China Sea and bully its neighbors such as Taiwan and Japan. Asia is quickly becoming the most important area of the world that effects American interests. Japan is America’s closest military and economic ally, China is America’s largest military and economic rival, and North Korea has now become America’s biggest short-term concern. Below is a succinct summary of the current developing situations in Asia that you should know about.
  • South Korea– President Park Geun-hye has officially been impeached and removed from office after being implicated in a corruption and extortion scandal. A new election will be held within 60 days to elect the new president of South Korea.
  • North Korea– The communist country successfully launched four ballistic missiles, and now appears to be preparing for another nuclear test. It is suspected Kim Jong Un is increasing tensions in order to get the United States to the negotiating table.
  • Japan- In its biggest show of force since WWII, Japan will send its largest warship to the South China Sea for a three-month tour. Since WWII Japan has largely been a pacifist country, however, the military ambitions of North Korea and China has forced Japan to bare its teeth.
  • China– The US has dismissed a Chinese proposal which calls for the United States to stop military exercises with South Korea, and in return North Korea will stop its nuclear program.
  • The Philippines– Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the navy to put up “structures” to assert sovereignty over a stretch of water in the South China Sea. The plan to build structures in the South China Sea comes after a Chinese survey ship was spotted off the coast of the Philippines.
