DPRK accuses S. Korea of trying to ignite all-out war

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Tuesday accused South Korea of trying to ignite an all-out war after last month's Yonphyong Island shelling incident.

South Korea's holding of a joint exercise with the United States and firing exercises at 29 venues have worsened the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the official Rodong Sinmun newspaper said in a commentary.

Besides, South Korea recently said it would continue the live-fire military drills and retaliate against the 'provocation' of the DPRK. This would bring the Korean Peninsula to a state of 'touch and go,' said the commentary.

The moves of South Korea aimed to ignite a larger scale of military conflict and bringing about an all-out war, said the commentary.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have been heightened since South Korea and the DPRK exchanged artillery fire on Nov. 23 near the Yonphyong Island, which killed four South Koreans.

After the incident, South Korea and the United States staged joint naval drills from Nov. 28 to Dec. 1 in waters west of the peninsula. On Dec. 3, Japan and the United States launched their biggest-ever joint military exercises, with South Korea taking part as an observer.

61st Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards

An Ateneo faculty member won in the Filipino division, while a San Diego-based writer got the award in English, the Palanca awards organizers announced Thursday. Pinoy photographers to hold Mount Pinatubo exhibit in US

A group of Filipino photojournalists, who covered and survived the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991, will hold in San Francisco in the United States a Mount Pinatubo@20 Photo Exhibit or 20 years after what was called the volcanic eruption of the century. Organized by the Philippine American Press Club-USA and Philippine News, Americas oldest Filipino-American newspaper, the exhibit will be staged for two days October 11 and 12 at the Social Hall of the Philippine Consulate at 447 Sutter Street San Francisco, CA 94108.
