Pakistani president summons parliament for Chinese premier address

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari summoned a special parliament session to meet in Islamabad on Dec. 19 for an address of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, officials in Islamabad said Tuesday.

The Foreign Ministry of Pakistan said that Premier Wen will visit Pakistan from Dec. 17 to 19 at the invitation of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

The parliament session will be held at 8 a.m. local time, an official announcement said.

Speaker of National Assembly Fehmida Mirza, who would preside over the special parliament session, will invite the Chinese premier to address the joint session of the National Assembly and the Senate.

During his three-day official visit to Pakistan, Premier Wen will meet with President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani to discuss wide-ranging topics of mutual interest.

The focus of the talks will be on building up mutually beneficial economic partnership, and greater understanding and cooperation on regional and international affairs.

Strict security measures have been taken in the country prior to Wen's visit and the capital police are making stringent security arrangements.

Premier Wen is scheduled to inaugurate the Pakistan-China Friendship Center, which is intended to facilitate exchanges among students, media and academic circles.

The two governments would also launch a new energy cooperation mechanism during Wen's visit, said Masood Khan, Pakistan's ambassador to Beijing.
