EC to decide Wednesday on Red Shirt MPs-elect

BANGKOK, July 26 - Thailand's Election Commission (EC) will decide on Wednesday whether to endorse the fourth batch of MPs-elect, including winning Red Shirt candidates in the July 3 general election, according to the EC Deputy Secretary-General Somchart Jesrichai.

The red winners whose MP status has not yet been certified are Jatuporn Prompan, Natthawut Saikua, Payup Panket, Jarupan Kuldiloke and Karun Hosakul. They contested in the poll under the banner of the opposition Pheu Thai Party which won a landslide victory.

The EC deputy secretary-general said the five election commissioners would be able to vote on the remaining MPs-elect status on Wednesday after the investigation into complaints is completed.

Meanwhile, Election Commissioner Sodsri Satayatham said by telephone that the commissioners also examined additional complaints against more than 10 MPs-elect but will announce its decision on Wednesday.

Mrs Sodsri added that the investigators will conclude their probe and present it to the five-member EC by Wednesday and then the EC may announce its decision on the fate of all remaining MPs-elect afterward.

That is up to all five commissioners as to whether they reach consensus on the matter, she said.

Mr Somchart also said the EC voted 3-2 to call a recount in the southern province of Yala's constituency 2 on July 31 after a Pheu Thai candidate lodged a complaint about alleged irregularities concerning wrong tallies, extra ballots being provided to eligible voters and vote counting at polling stations not matching the voter turnout.

The Democrat candidate won by 48 votes over Pheu Thai in Yala's constituency 2.

The EC has so far certified the status of 402 MPs.

The constitution states that at least 95 per cent or 475 of 500 MPs must be endorsed before the House of Representatives can be convened. The new parliament must meet within 30 days of the July 3 election to select a house speaker, and has another 30 days to pick a prime min! ister. ( MCOT online news)
