Three killed in separate attacks in southern provinces

YALA, Aug 25 - A local official and his three-year-old daughter were killed in Yala while a defence volunteer was shot dead at an attack at a school in rural Songkhla on Wednesday night.

At least 30 attackers fired at the home of Mani Sulaiman Sengmasu, a member of the Talowae sub-district administration organisation in Yala's Yaha district.

He and his three-year-old daughter were killed and nine defence volunteers were wounded.

The house was burned and four cars were destroyed. Trees were felled and tripod spikes were strewn on a road leading to the house to obstruct the authorities response to inspect the scene.

Police said they believed the attack was by an insurgent group led by Mr Ubadeela, active in the area.

In the same district, ten Army Rangers and defence volunteers were wounded in an attack on military outpost on Wednesday night. All were sent to Bunnang Sata hospital.

In the nearby province of Songkhla, presumed insurgents launched an attack on a military outpost in Thepa district on Wednesday night, killing one defence volunteer.

The Baan Koh Lae Nang outpost is located three kilometres from the main Hat Yai-Pattani road No 43.

At least 15 gunmen arrived at the base on two pick-up trucks and raided Baan Koh Lae Nang School where defence volunteer rangers are stationed, shooting at the post. The volunteers returned fire and called for reinforcements. The attackers retreated to main road number 43.

Defence volunteer Baraherm Chae died at the scene and another volunteer was injured.

Joint forces are searching for the suspects in a forest area enclosed by a nearby river. (MCOT online news)
