Meet Shamcey Supsup


By ROWENA JOY A. SANCHEZ MANILA, Philippines Instead of letting herself be overcome by the pressure of matching the fourth place finish of Maria Venus Raj in last years Miss Universe pageant, 2011 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Shamcey Supsup would rather use it in a positive way.

The General Santos City native is determined to seize the much-coveted title, telling The Buzz in a taped interview aired Aug. 7, If youre destined to win, you would get the crown. And I believe Ive worked hard, I have the discipline, Im determined and I have the support from everyone. I believe we have a chance.

Shamcey also related the pieces of advice she received from Venus.

Ang sabi lang niya just be yourself, enjoy everything there kasi its a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at kung nahihirapan ka na, isipin mo youre there because you wanted to be there. It was a choice, said the licensed architect and University of the Philippines-Dilimans College of Architecture magna cum laude graduate.

Shamcey is set to fly solo to the pageants host country for this year, Brazil, today, Aug. 8, to continue her rigorous preparations.

She admitted being scared to travel alone.

Ang layo, parang opposite side of the world. More than 24 hours daw yung biyahe Lahat ng bagahe ko, ako ang magdadala, she said.

With 87 other hopefulsa lot of beautiful [and] intelligent girls, as Shamcey puts itvying for the crown, the 24-year-old beauty queen said that more than anything, emotional and mental preparation are needed in order to stand out.

So you have to have that self-confidence, she noted.

Shamcey added, though, that she still needs to train harder to further equip her for the competition.

Siyempre yung mga walk training, catwalk with past beauty queens like Venus Raj. Lately I had training with Karen Agustin. Tinuruan niya ko ng mga kinds of poses, kung pano i-move yung he! ad I thi nk marami pang mga susunod na trainings sa akin, Shamcey related.

In her quest to get the crown, Shamcey revealed that her lucky charm are the people who support and love me and alam ko whatever happens there, nandun pa rin sila.

Venus, who relayed Shamceys forthcoming departure for Brazil on Umagang Kay Ganda, Aug. 8, aired this message for the latter:

Good luck sayo Shamcey, alam kong gagalingan mo talaga yan.

The 60th Miss Universe pageant will take place on Sept. 12 at the Credicard Hall in So Paulo.

61st Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards

An Ateneo faculty member won in the Filipino division, while a San Diego-based writer got the award in English, the Palanca awards organizers announced Thursday. The Palanca Memorial Awards are considered the nations most prestigious prizes for writing and are given annually in a broad range of categories. But the awards for the novel are given only every three years. From a pool of 57 manuscripts, 84 percent more than the number of novels submitted in 2008, emerged the two winners: Ateneo de Manila University faculty member Allan Alberto N. Derain won The Carlos Palanca Memorial Award Grand Prize for the Novel in Filipino for his Ang Banal na Aklat ng Kumag. Pinoy photographers to hold Mount Pinatubo exhibit in US

A group of Filipino photojournalists, who covered and survived the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991, will hold in San Francisco in the United States a Mount Pinatubo@20 Photo Exhibit or 20 years after what was called the volcanic eruption of the century. Organized by the Philippine American Press Club-USA and Philippine News, Americas oldest Filipino-American newspaper, the exhibit will be staged for two days October 11 and 12 at the Social Hall of the Philippine Consulate at 447 Sutter Street San Francisco, CA 94108. Organized by former Manila Bulletin photographer Nick Sagmit and former Times Journal photojournalist Ed Galvez, the exhibit will feature photographs during and after the eruption on June 15, 1991. The featured photos include the award-winning shot of Albert Garcia, whose escape from blazing hot pyroclastic explosion picture won first prize in the nature category of the World Press Photographers photo contest.
