PM asserts policy statements for Parliament feasible but specifies no timeframe

BANGKOK, Aug 20 -- Prime Minsiter Yingluck Shinawatra asserted that all policies contained in the policy statement to be delivered to Parliament next week are feasible but unable to specify timeframe.

The joint sitting of Parliament to hear the government's policy statement was set for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week (August 23-24).

In response to criticism from the opposition that the government policy was different from the campaign that Pheu Thai Party had promised during the election campaign, Ms Yingluck said all her party's pledges to the public were included in the government policy and she was ready to clarify them when she delivered the policy statement.

The government's policy statement comprises 35 pages, with the premier stressing major topics including His Majesty the King's philosophy of a sufficiency economy, honesty, building a sustainable balanced economy and society, fostering national reconciliation, cracking down on corruption in the public sector, suppressing illicit drugs, resolving violence and restoring peace in the three southernmost provinces, helping the public reduce the high cost of living amid inflation, and to revive positive relations with neighbouring countries.

The Pheu Thai Party's pledge during their political campaign to raise the national minimum wage to Bt300 per day and to ensure college graduates have a minimum starting salary of Bt15,000 per month were also reportedly included in the policy statement as ready to implement within its first year in office as the government.

However, Ms Yingluck admitted that the timeframe for each policy to be implemented could not be announced, as some policies affected the capital market or the overall economy and the government would announce them on a case by case basis.

The premier also said she had not yet assigned responsibilities for each deputy premiers, as this had to await cabinet approval.

There are five deputy prime ministers - Yongyuth Wichaidit, Pol Capt Chaler! m Yubumr ung, Pol Gen Kowit Wattana, Kittirat Na-Ranong and Chumpol Silapa-archa.

Ms Yingluck also denied figutive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra had travelled to Cambodia as reported.

Mr Thaksin, Ms Yingluck's elder brother, will reportedly visit Cambodia on Friday and Saturday, taking some international investors to meet and play golf with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to make a business deal.

According to a newspaper report, quoting source from Pheu Thai Party, the former Thai premier will also help the Cambodian government negotiate a plan for the joint development of a petroleum venture in the Gulf of Thailand within a sector both countries claim mineral rights. (MCOT online news)
