Drugs burning ceremony held on International day of Drug abuse
Islamabad: To commemorate the International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking, a Drug Burning Ceremony by Anti Narcotic Force was held on Sunday at Rawalpindi. Minister for Narcotic Control, Haji Khuda Bux Rajar was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
Director General Anti Narcotic Force major General Syed Shakeel Hussain, high ranking officials from law Enforcement Agencies, Civil administration, Diplomats, Drug Liaison Officers of number of countries, Media representative, social workers and representatives of NGOs were also present on the occasion. While addressing the gathering, Haji Khuda Bux Rajar, Minister for Narcotics Control reiterated the commitment of Government of Pakistan for fight against the menace of drugs. He appreciated the efforts and commitment of the ANF in its fight against drugs and drug abuse. He further stated that the narcotics being burnt in the ceremony speaks volumes of ANF commitment to the noble cause. Major General Syed Shakeel Hussain, DG, ANF said that Pakistan is facing serious threat with regards to drugs issue, which is a challenging task for ANF. He indicated that we are located in the neighborhood of Afghanistan which is the major contributor to the world's requirement of opiates.
He explained that a significant portion of Afghan opiates is transited through Pakistan, making it transit as well as victim country. ANF is looking after almost 2500 km long and porous border with the minimal strength confronted with an enemy who is crafty, well organizes, better equipped and knows no borders. DG ANF further added that during the year 2010, ANF and other LEAs have seized 19813 Kgs of Opium, 4345 Kgs of Morphine, 4221 Kgs of Heroin and 212145 Kgs of Hashish. He also briefed that ANF has made the significant seizures of 60778 Kgs Precursors Pakistan is actively collaborating with regional countries as well as the international community in order to eff! ectively prevent trafficking of drugs into and through Pakistan to international markets. DG ANF thanked the Federal Minister and esteem guests for sparing their time to be with them. Ceremony ended with the promise to continue the relentless efforts with full devotion and dedication against the drug barons and the curse of drugs.
