S. Korea likely to approve world's 1st stem cell therapeutic drug

SEOUL, June 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's drug safety agency will likely approve a stem cell therapeutic drug early next month in what could be the world's first move to permit the sale of a stem-cell medicine, officials said Friday.

The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) is expected to finalize all procedures needed to permit the sale of "Hearticellgram-AMI," a stem cell therapy for acute myocardial infarction, on July 1, according to the KFDA officials The therapy was developed by FCB-Pharmicell, which specializes in developing stem cell drugs for incurable diseases. The company is headquartered in Seongnam, south of Seoul.

The drug has passed all three procedures, including safety and validity tests, needed for its approval. The other remaining steps will likely be completed soon, the officials said.

Hearticellgram-AMI takes somatic stem cells extracted from the patient's own body that are then cultured and directly injected into his or her damaged heart. (Yonhap)

An Ateneo faculty member won in the Filipino division, while a San Diego-based writer got the award in English, the Palanca awards organizers announced Thursday. A group of Filipino photojournalists, who covered and survived the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991, will hold in San Francisco in the United States a Mount Pinatubo@20 Photo Exhibit or 20 years after what was called the volcanic eruption of the century. Organized by the Philippine American Press Club-USA and Philippine News, Americas oldest Filipino-American newspaper, the exhibit will be staged for two days October 11 and 12 at the Social Hall of the Philippine Consulate at 447 Sutter Street San Francisco, CA 94108.
