Arrest warrant for gunman who killed Bhumjaithai canvasser to be issued next few days

BANGKOK, June 18 -- Thai police expect that arrest warrants for the gunman who killed a Bhumjaithai Party canvasser in Bangkok earlier this week along with those suspected of masterminding the plot would be issued within the next few days, a senior police officer said Saturday.

Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen, adviser to the Royal Thai Police, said investigative police officers have been ordered by national police chief Pol Gen Wichean Potephosree to focus efforts on arresting the gunman and those who were behind the killing of Suban Chiraphanwanit on Thursday in Bangkok before the July 3 general election.

Gen Pongsapat said witnesses of the daytime killing had given police investigators useful information and it is expected that arrest warrants could be issued in the next two or three days.

Police have been sent to the central province of Lopburi home of Mr Suban, chairman of the Lopburi Administration Organisation who also worked as a leading Bhumjaithai canvasser, to gather more which led to the murder and to hunt for the gunman, Gen Pongsapat said.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who is responsible for security affairs, said he had assigned Pol Gen Aswin Kwanmuang, adviser to the Royal Thai Police and Bangkok police chief, to hunt for the gunman and that he believed the culprits would be arrested soon.

After Thursday's killing, 11 more election candidates have requested police protection, bringing the total for candidates seeking protection to 377 nationwide, said Gen Pongsapat. (MCOT online news)
