Highly-revered monk Luangta Maha Bua dies at 98
UDON THANI, Jan 30 - Disciples and followers of Thailand's highly-revered monk Luangta Maha Bua Yanasampanno thronged to make merit during morning alms for the monk who died early Sunday at the age of 98.
Luangta Maha Bua died of lung infection and an intestinal obstruction at 3.53am at Wat Pa Ban Tad in the northeastern province of Udon Thani.
Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn will preside over a royally-sponsored bathing rite at the temple at 6pm Sunday.
The monk was admitted to Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok on Dec 3 after being treated earlier at hospitals in Khon Kaen and Udon Thani. He returned to Wat Pa Ban Tad on Jan 3.
Luangta Maha Bua was born on Aug 12, 1913 and was the second child of 15 brothers and sisters. His parents, Thongdaeng and Paeng Lohitdee,
were farmers in Mahasarakham and moved to settle in Udon Thani.
He was ordained at the age of 20 at Wat Yothanimit in Udon Thani following a Thai Buddhist tradition for a son to ordain for his parents, and he never left the monkhood.
Luangta Maha Bua launched a fund-raising campaign to gather dollars to give the funds to the Bank of Thailand for Thailand's national reserves in April 1998 as the country was facing the Tom Yum Kung financial crisis in 1997-1998. (MCOT online news)
