Istanbul meeting, considerable success for Iran: Official
Tehran, Jan 23, IRNA Assistant Secretary of Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) in foreign policy and international security affairs called Istanbul meeting a considerable success for Iran.
Speaking to Iranian TV on Saturday evening, Baqeri said in the past, the west adament to determine pre-conditions for negotiations, but now they accept that Iran is in a situation to determine conditions for them.
Referring to political trend of the talks between Iran and Group 5+1, he said Iran's move in this direction was progressive and the talks indicated Iran's success.
He added that the Geneva talk was formed in the framework of Iran's proposed package, but they insisted on suspension issue.
Baqeri continued that in Geneva talks, Iran presented two up-to-date packages and the other side changed its concentration from suspension to limitation of Iran's nuclear activities.
The achievement of Geneva 3 was agreement on talks about common points and in this round their two-way strategy was dialogue and pressure, which was changed to dialogue and cooperation.
Relying on these achievements, Iran entered the Istanbul talks and tried to use this achievement for restoring its rights and activities.
Iran declared in Istanbul talks that is ready for cooperation even for fuel swap issue, but under the condition that comes in the framework of cooperation and not confrontation.
Baqeri added that the basis for Geneva 3 talks was cooperation which means it should be in the framework of logic and the logic is international conventions.
International Atomic Energy Agency regulations and Non-Proliferation Treaty were frameworks for disarmament, non-proliferation and peaceful nuclear cooperation.
Baqeri said that our common logic is NPT, which can be a basis for talks.
He added that the secretary of SNSC underlined in Istanbul that Iran is not trying to buy time, because Iran activities are under IAEA supervision and holding talks will not g! ive us a n extra opportunity.
Assistant secretary of SNSC said that our conclusion from Friday evening and Saturday morning talks was that they needed more time for changing confrontation approach to cooperation one.
He called Istanbul talks succes for Iran and added that they should evaluate themselves too to find out whether they succeeded or not.
One of proposals of EU foreign policy chief Katharine Ashton was that for having a symbolic achievement it is better to conclude the issue of fuel swap and Iran accepted it in the framework of cooperation, but declared that the issue must be presented as a cooperation subject, otherwise Iran has no motive to enter the subject.
In the meeting of Saturday, we underlined that the issue of fuel swap is not Iran's need now, so reason for us to enter the negotiation on this issue is just cooperation and not need.
He added that such logical framework caused that they could not take a negative stance against Iran and Jalili told them that they would have time to think about it.
They have no logical reason for taking confronting trend, because according to the IAEA regulations, the issue of Iran's nuclear activities should be submitted to the UN Security Council when the agency inspectors declare that the activities deviated to the military purposes which did not happen in Iran's case.
During period of time between Geneva 3 and Istanbul talks, a delegation paid a visit to Iran's installations which showed that western claims about Iran is not correct.
The assistant secretary of SNSC said that one of the reasons which shows they do not have a logical reason is that they are following a monopolizing trend in science.
He concluded that Iran believes that the talks can continue in future and we think they have enough time to change their confrontation trend to cooperation one. (IRNA)
