NED students visit Bin Qasim Power Plant

Karachi, Karachi Electric Supply Company is an organization which aspires to engage the youth of Karachi. Keeping in line with the same spirit, KESC recently invited the students and professors of NED University of Engineering and Technology at their Bin Qasim Power Station II, which is an upcoming, modern, 560MW power plant being setup by KESC, says a KESC release here Monday.

The purpose was to give the engineering students a look and feel of the real life business challenges and for the purpose approximately 100 students and teachers got a chance to witness KESC's state of the art facility. Mr. Shakeel - the Project Manager, who heads the strategic operations at Bin Qasim Power Plant II, briefed the students and professors about the working mechanism of the power plant. He emphasized over the immense number of safety aspects involved in the running of working power station as its prime importance from a operational engineer's point of view. Later on, the team was presented with the details of the power plant and its distinguishing feature, that is the ability to run on coal, which is a big step forward that KESC is undertaking keeping in view the rising cost of electricity and to find cheaper alternate means of power generation. In Pakistan currently 3000 megawatts are generated through furnace oil and, if measures are taken to convert these power plants to coal, the country will be in a position to save approximately one billion dollars per year. The students were divided into various groups and were given a tour of the entire facility. The tour was designed in a manner which enabled students to comprehend KESC's perspective of utilizing the coal reserves available in Pakistan. It was also a way of encouraging the engineers to strategize innovative ways to use this abundant resource. The trip was a learning experience for the budding new engineers of NED University.
