Mirza orders beefing up security for April 4

Karachi:Strongly condemning terror attacks on the convoys of JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazalur Rehman in Swabi and Charsadda, Home Minister Sindh Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza has directed the IGP to beef up security on the occasion of death anniversary of PPP founder chairman Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on April 04 (Friday).

Dr. Mirza has directed IGP Fayyaz Leghari to take extraordinary security measures for mosques, imambarghas, madaris, schools, and worship places of minorities. Regarding the administrative affairs for the commemoration on Aril 04, he has directed Leghari to chalk out a strategy, in coordination with other law enforcement agencies (LEAs), for intelligence to avoid any untoward situation. Furthermore the home minister directed regional police officers of Hyderabad and Sukkur, besides the CCPO Karachi, to enhance security checks at all entry points of Gharhi Khuda Buksh and also to keep a close watch on all convoys headed for Gharhi Khuda Buksh. In a separate directive to the RPO Sukkur, he instructed him to ensure a detailed briefing to the police personnel of the adjoining areas of Garhi Khuda Buksh, besides taking all suspects into custody. Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza has urged the public to fully cooperate with LEAs and immediately report suspicious activities, parcels, etc to the Home Ministers Complaint Cell on the numbers- 02199207744-48, CCPO Karachi Monitoring Cell 02199212663, RPO Sukkur Control Room 0715630289, RPO Hyderabad Control Room 0229200093 or contact nearby police stations or SPs office in this regard.

61st Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards

An Ateneo faculty member won in the Filipino division, while a San Diego-based writer got the award in English, the Palanca awards organizers announced Thursday. The Palanca Memorial Awards are considered the nations most prestigious prizes for writing and are given annually in a broad range of categories. But the awards for the novel are given only every three years. From a pool of 57 manuscripts, 84 percent more than the number of novels submitted in 2008, emerged the two winners: Ateneo de Manila University faculty member Allan Alberto N. Pinoy photographers to hold Mount Pinatubo exhibit in US

A group of Filipino photojournalists, who covered and survived the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991, will hold in San Francisco in the United States a Mount Pinatubo@20 Photo Exhibit or 20 years after what was called the volcanic eruption of the century. Organized by the Philippine American Press Club-USA and Philippine News, Americas oldest Filipino-American newspaper, the exhibit will be staged for two days October 11 and 12 at the Social Hall of the Philippine Consulate at 447 Sutter Street San Francisco, CA 94108. Organized by former Manila Bulletin photographer Nick Sagmit and former Times Journal photojournalist Ed Galvez, the exhibit will feature photographs during and after the eruption on June 15, 1991.
