Colombia Captures FARC Rebel Linked to Kidnapping of 3 Americans

Colombian authorities say a member of the FARC rebel group, wanted for his alleged role in the kidnapping of three U.S. defense contractors in 2003, has been captured.

Officials announced Tuesday that police apprehended Alexander Beltran in the Caribbean city of Cartagena. He is expected to be handed over to U.S. authorities.

Beltran has been linked to the kidnapping of U.S. defense contractors Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes and Keith Stansell. The Northrop Grumman employees were taken captive after the plane in which they were traveling crashed in the Colombian jungle during a counter-narcotics mission.

The contractors, along with French-Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt and 11 others, were rescued in July 2008.

Since the 1960s, the FARC has waged a battle against the Colombian government and is holding several people captive in jungle hideouts. The FARC is listed as a terrorist group by the United States, Colombia and the European Union.
