US University Creates Civil Discourse Center
A U.S. university is set to announce the creation of an institute to promote civility in political debate. The National Institute for Civil Discourse will be located at the University of Arizona, and organizers say it will bring together leaders from across the political spectrum to address the issue.
The idea for the center followed a shooting rampage last month in the city of Tucson, in which six people were killed and 13 wounded, including a U.S. congresswoman.
The university, located in Tucson, hosted a memorial service following the shootings. U.S. President Barack Obama spoke at the service.
Former presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush will serve as honorary chairmen of the institute. The center will also have former Senate majority leader Tom Daschle and former Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor as honorary co-chairs.
Former secretary of state Madeleine Albright will serve on the institute's board.
