WAPDA geared up efforts for optimum utlization of hydropower potential
Lahore: In view of increasing electricity demand in the country,Water & Power Development Authority WAPDA geared up efforts for optimum utilisation of hydropower potential by initiating number of projects which will not only help bridge gap between electricity generation and its consumption but also improve ratio of low-cost hydel electricity in the system to stabilise tariff.
This was stated by WAPDA Chairman Shakil Durrani during visit to under construction 106MW Golen Gol Hydropower Project, which is part of least-cost energy generation plan being executed by WAPDA on priority. He said South Korea contractors M/s SAMBU have been mobilised to site and project scheduled to be completed in four years significantly contribute to socio-economic uplift of the country in general and Chitral in particular. Hydropower projects of about 1400MW are under construction. 72-MW Khan Khwar Project has been completed and three others of 350 MW completed in 2012. Golen Gol Hydropower Project is located on River Golen Gol, a major tributary of River Mastuj in Chitral district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Saudi Development Fund, Kuwait Development Fund & OPEC Fund are providing $107 million for project which ons completion generate about 436 million units (Gwh) of electricity annually. Beingenvironment friendly hydropower project, it will help reduce dependence on expensive thermal power, saving foreign exchange amounting to $34 million.
