Thai FM rejects allegations Thailand using aircraft, poisonous gas in border clash

BANGKOK, April 23 - Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya will send a protest letter to Cambodia and issue a statement that the Thai army did not use any aircraft to invade Cambodian territory except using helicopters to airlift injured soldiers.

"We protected our sovereignty and our counterattack targeted the Cambodian army base to limit the area of clash. Thai soldiers also did not use poisonous gas as accused by Cambodia," Mr Kasit said.

Thailand still wants to settle the dispute based on existing mechanisms, namely the Regional Border Committee (RBC), the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), and the General Border Committee (GBC), the foreign minister said. He will contact his Cambodian counterpart to seek further negotiations.

Thailand would like to continue cooperation with Cambodia under the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), he added.

The Associated Press reported the Cambodian defense ministry statement Saturday accusing Thailand of seeking to seize two ancient temples and said Thai aircraft supported the attacks, including reconnaissance planes that "flew deep into Cambodia's airspace."The statement also said Thailand had fired 75 and 105 mm shells "loaded with poisonous gas" into Cambodian territory, but did not elaborate.(MCOT online news)
