Voting starts in 2nd round of Japanese local elections
TOKYO, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Voting started Sunday in the second round of Japanese regional elections, which are considered a key test to the government of Prime Minister Naoto Kan.
Voters are casting ballots to pick 73 new city mayors, 63 town and village leaders. The assembly members for 292 municipalities in the country will also be elected.
In Tokyo, candidates running for 13 ward mayors and assembly members of 21 wards, had been appealing to voters in residential areas days before the voting started.
In the first round which began on April 10, candidates refrained from appeals and campaigning tactics due to the twin disasters in March and the ongoing nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant.
In that round, voters chose governors in 12 prefectures, including Tokyo and Hokkaido. Elections were also carried out for mayors of four major cities, assembly members of 41 prefectures and 15 of the country's municipalities.
The ruling Democratic Party of Japan met with a major setback in the first round.
